Intel has announced their latest line of low-cost, low-power processor, called Atom. The processor maintains compatibility with the x86 instruction set. It measures less than 25 mm². These new chips, previously codenamed Silverthorne and Diamondville, will be manufactured on Intel's 45nm process with hi-k metal gate technology. The chips have a thermal design power (TDP) specification in 0.6-2.5 watt range and scale to 1.8GHz speeds depending on the application. By comparison, Intel's mobile Core 2 Duo processors have a TDP in the 35-watt range.
These processors are destined for Mobile Internet Devices (MID) and small form factor PCs. We believe that these processors were initially slated for use in the OLPC XO Intel edition. Intel was initially part of the OLPC foundation board but later dropped all participation due to conflicts. No Intel-based version of the XO laptop currently exists.
