Birmingham, Alabama students aren't the only ones getting in on OLPC technology. Lt. Governor Pat Quinn of Illinois is testing a pilot program at Forest Park School District 91. Children at Betsy Ross Elementary School received 100 laptops last Monday. Another 100 laptops were sent to students in Rwanda, Cambodia and Haiti.

"This school district is really a leader in the whole state of Illinois in showing what technology can be," Quinn said.

Katherine Valleau, a 5th grade teacher at Betsy Ross, attended a training session at MIT in Cambridge, Mass., and will help teach other District 91 instructors how to incorporate use of the machines into their classrooms.

"The depth that we can bring to learning with these is extraordinary," Valleau said.

There are no plans to purchase more laptops for other grades levels, but that may change in the future.
